PURPLE WATER PIPES
Updated: Dec 11, 2020
You may, or may not have been in a grocery or office parking lot and noticed purple plastic pipes in landscaping areas used to water plants. The color of these pipes actually signal that the water being used is reclaimed water. Reclaimed irrigation water is a process of capturing "grey water" for use of water landscaping. Grey water is generally produced from sinks, washing machines, showers, and other common household and commercial machines that do not contain pathogens or contaminants.
Using reclaimed water is becoming more popular as developers and homeowners try to conserve clean water and find uses for it that are clean enough to water plants with. This results in cost effectiveness for the landowner, sustainability, and also allows them to water landscape when water
restrictions may be in place due to drought issues. While most properties do not have access to reclaimed water, they have to, instead, use potable water for irrigation.
