How Much Does it Cost to Clear Land?

If you have property that is overgrown with trees and brush and are looking to get it cleared for a new project or even just taking back control of your property, you will want to find a contractor that specializes in this type of work. Normally, contractors will price these types of projects by day or by acre. This is due to the unknown factors of what lies beneath the brush and how large the trees are. A normal land clearing project can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 and up depending on how big of an area you need cleared and the type of clearing you need.

There are a few key factors to consider before contacting contractors for a quote:

  1. Before clearing you need to make sure that you do not disturb any septic areas. This includes systems that are already installed and new systems to be installed. If you have not done a test for septic on your property, you’re better to hold off so you do not damage any areas where it could be installed.

  2. Type of clearing: If you just need brush cleared, this will be significantly less than clearing large trees out.

  3. If you are taking out trees, what will you do with the trees? Sell the wood? Stack on site? Put into a burn pile?

  4. How do you want the space to look after clearing? Do you want it to have grass? Do you need a road? Do you need a pad?

  5. Are you planning on clearing more than an acre? In most places, that means you will have to get a permit and set up erosion control.

  6. Do you want the contractor to mulch the trees? Technology has come a long way! If you haven’t seen them already, do yourself a favor and watch this video of a mulcher eating a tree in no time! Mulchers can take slightly longer to remove trees and mulch them up, but you do not have to worry about what to do with the trees after they are removed.

At Excavation Contractors LLC, our average land clearing job will run about $15,000 and usually includes under an acre of clearing with trees and debris stacked on site for burning. If the mulching technique is preferred, the average job is about $20,000 and up. These prices can fluctuate depending on site conditions.
